What Is Supreme?

Supreme is the New York streetwear label James Jebbia founded in 1994. It started as a skate shop on Lafayette Street in Lower Manhattan, laid out with the clothes around the walls so skaters could ride straight through the store.

Supreme is built on two seasons a year, Spring/Summer and Fall/Winter. Instead of releasing a whole season at once, it drops a small group of new pieces every Thursday, online and in its stores. Those weekly drops, and the short supply that comes with them, are a big part of why Supreme pieces are so hard to get at retail.

The History of Supreme

Jebbia opened the first Supreme store in April 1994 with a small range of tees and a staff of young local skaters. The red Box Logo, with Supreme written in white Futura Heavy Oblique, came soon after. Jebbia based it on the work of the artist Barbara Kruger, whose red-and-white text pieces he had seen in a book.

From that downtown skate shop, Supreme grew into one of the most influential names in streetwear while staying rooted in skateboarding, art and New York street culture.

Supreme Collaborations

Supreme is known for its collaborations. Its long-running partnership with The North Face began in 2007 and has produced some of the label's best-known outerwear. Supreme has worked with Nike since the early 2000s, from skate shoes to the Nike Air Force 1 with a red Box Logo at the heel. In 2017 it released a joint collection with Louis Vuitton, shown on the Paris runway.
