What Is Off-White?

Off-White is the luxury label Virgil Abloh founded in Milan in 2013. Abloh described the name as the grey area between black and white, and that idea runs through everything the brand makes: familiar objects, slightly reframed. Its visual language is instantly recognisable. Words sit inside quotation marks, industrial zip ties hang from the laces, and diagonal stripes and arrows mark the branding.

On sneakers, the same tools become a kind of annotation. Text is printed straight onto the upper and a zip tie hangs from the laces, so a shoe you have seen a thousand times suddenly reads like a working prototype. In 2018 Abloh was also named artistic director of Louis Vuitton menswear, carrying the same sensibility to the house while still leading Off-White. The Ten: Where Nike x Off-White Began

In 2017 Abloh and Nike unveiled The Ten, ten classic silhouettes rebuilt in his language: the Air Jordan 1, Air Max 90, Air Presto, Air VaporMax, Blazer Mid, Converse Chuck Taylor, Zoom Fly SP, Air Force 1 Low, React Hyperdunk 2017 and Air Max 97. The collection came in two halves. 'Revealing' pairs were hand-cut, open and reconstructed. 'Ghosting' pairs used translucent uppers.

The Nike x Off-White Dunk Low

The Nike x Off-White Dunk Low became one of the label's defining canvases. The first versions arrived in December 2019 in University Red, Pine Green and University Gold, each with a two-tone leather upper, an exposed tongue, the white zip tie, orange tabs, 'SHOELACES' printed on the laces and a second set of trail-style cord laces.

In 2021 came THE 50: 50 numbered Dunk Low versions, each varying in laces, tongue, sockliner and zip tie. Every version is its own release, so each pair is known by its number as much as by its colours. It turned a single silhouette into a collectible series.
