Who Is KAWS?

KAWS is the artist Brian Donnelly, born in Jersey City, New Jersey, in 1974 and based in Brooklyn, New York. He started out as a graffiti writer, and after moving to New York in the 1990s he became known for painting his own characters over advertisements on billboards, bus shelters and phone booths.

Before his art took over, he worked as a freelance background painter on animated series including Doug and Daria. That cartoon training runs through everything he makes: familiar, rounded characters with a twist, most famously crossed-out XX eyes.

The KAWS Companion and Other Characters

The Companion is the character that made KAWS famous. It first appeared as a vinyl figure in 1999: a skull-like head with XX eyes on a body with the gloves, shorts and rounded proportions of a classic American cartoon. Since then it has been made as small vinyl figures, as giant sculptures and on clothing.

Other KAWS characters have followed, including BFF, a blue character with the same XX eyes. Together they form a cast that appears across his paintings, toys and collaborations, which is why a KAWS piece is recognisable at a glance.

KAWS Clothing and Collaborations

KAWS has always moved between art and product. In the 2000s he ran OriginalFake, a store and label in Tokyo's Aoyama district made with Japanese toy company Medicom Toy, which closed in 2013. Since 2016 his longest-running clothing partner has been UNIQLO, through its UT line of graphic tees.

The KAWS x UNIQLO UT collections have put his characters on tees, sweatshirts and bags at an everyday scale. Highlights include the KAWS x Sesame Street UT collection in 2018, which drew Cookie Monster, Big Bird and friends with XX eyes, and KAWS + Warhol UT in 2024, which paired his characters with the work of Andy Warhol, including Warhol's famous banana.
