The Canon G7 X Mark III keeps the Mark II lens and adds 4K, a stacked sensor, DIGIC 8 and a mic input.
The Canon PowerShot G7 X Mark III keeps the Mark II’s 20.1-megapixel 1.0-inch sensor size and 24–100mm equivalent f/1.8–2.8 lens, then changes the sensor design, processor, video and burst. It adds a stacked sensor, a DIGIC 8 processor, 4K video, a 3.5mm microphone input and a much faster burst. The main differences between the two are in video.

Both cameras use a 1.0-inch type sensor with about 20.1 effective megapixels. The difference is the construction. Canon lists the Mark III sensor as stacked CMOS, while the Mark II uses a back-illuminated CMOS design. TechRadar and Photography Blog both describe the stacked design as new for the Mark III.
The processor moves from DIGIC 7 in the Mark II to DIGIC 8 in the Mark III, according to Canon and Photography Blog.
This is the real split. Canon lists the Mark II with Full HD (1920x1080) as its top video mode. TechRadar’s Mark II review confirms there is no 4K. The Mark III records 4K movies, and TechRadar reports 4K up to 30p with no crop, plus Full HD at up to 120 frames per second for slow motion.

The Mark III also adds a 3.5mm microphone input, listed by Canon and flagged as new by TechRadar.
On livestreaming, Canon lists YouTube live streaming for the Mark III but adds a caveat: cameras shipped from August 2025 omit the function, while earlier cameras can get it through optional firmware. TechRadar lists it as a new feature of the Mark III. Treat it as dependent on when the camera shipped and check Canon’s notes.
Canon lists both cameras with a 24–100mm equivalent lens at f/1.8–2.8, and TechRadar confirms the match in both reviews.

Both have a 3.0-inch tilting touchscreen of roughly 1,040,000 dots, per Canon. For the black and silver finishes, see Canon G7 X Mark III: black vs silver.
Canon lists continuous shooting of about 8 frames per second for the Mark II. For the Mark III it lists about 20 frames per second without autofocus, about 8 with autofocus (JPEG), and a 30 fps RAW Burst mode. TechRadar reports the same 20 fps and 8 fps with autofocus figures.

Canon rates the Mark III at about 265 shots per charge, and TechRadar gives the same figure. The two sources disagree on the Mark II battery figure, so no battery comparison is made here.
